ABOUT THE AREA

Oakville is one of the Toronto area's most affluent suburbs. Over 260 national and international companies are headquartered here. Old Oakville, located on the shores of Lake Ontario, features two picturesque harbours lined with sailboats. Oakville is in great demand with homeowners who cherish its outstanding collection of heritage homes, and value the upscale shopping district along Lakeshore Road.

The new part of Oakville, north of the Q.E.W., is filled with new home subdivisions. The Oakville Town Hall, the internationally respected Sheridan College, and the world class Glen Abbey Golf Club are all located in this part of Oakville.

The Oakville Arts Council is a not-for-profit charitable organization that sponsors numberous arts groups and events including the Oakville Children's Choir, Oakville Museum, Oakville Art Society, Oakville Galleries, and the Oakville Symphony. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts stages first class theatrical productions. Local as well as international artists perform here. Sheridan College runs the acclaimed Theatre Sheridan, where students perform cabaret-style musicals and theatrical productions.

The Oakville Entertainment Centrum is a mega-entertainment complex featuring a 24-screen cinema, an 18 hold glow in the dark mini-golf course, a family fitness centre, a bowling alley, a games centre, and a mix of retailers and restaurants. The Harbour Lighthouse and Conference Centre overlooks Bronte Harbour and features two banquet and meeting areas and two restaurants.

The downtown Oakville shopping district on Lakeshore Road is the crown jewel of this popular lakeside community. The heritage buildings that line this street are home to some of the finest clothing boutiques, furniture and design stores, gift shops, antique shops, and restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area. Many events are held there, including the Oakville Waterfront Festival, the Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival, and Autumn Festival, and a Santa Claus Parade. Midnight madness and sidewalk sales are also annual events.

The Bronte Village shopping district caters mostly to the area residents. The north end of Oakville contains a plethora of shopping centres of which the two largest are Oakville Town Centre and Oakville Place.
