ABOUT THE AREA

Barrie is a lively and attractive city with excellent swimming beaches and challenging ski opportunities. With over three hundred hectares of parkland scattered through the city, there are numerous opportunities to get out and enjoy nature. Many of these parks are on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, with extensive biking, roller blading and walking trails.

In 1997, a $120 million health care facility was built next to Georgian College. The City is home to a 40,000 square foot public library, located downtown at the junction of Worsley and Owen Street.

During the War of 1812 British troops used Kempenfelt Bay to bypass the American forces at Detroit. Their presence is reflected in many street names, and the city itself is named after a British Admiral - Sir Robert Barrie Commodore. Between the late 1800's and early 1900's, numberous changes occurred. In 1865 the railway joined Barrie to the City of York.

It's Industry, resoursces and the building of Highway 400 in 1950, provided easy access to the area making Barrie a tourist hot spot.

The average summer temperatures in Barrie fall in the mid to high twenties, with the waters from Lake Simcoe keeping the climate fairly moderate.

Barrie grows at approximately five per cent a year as it attracts people from over Ontario. It is currently one of Canda's fastest growning cities.

Georgian College, one of the finest commumity colleges in the area is located in Barrie. This is Canada's leading post-secondary institution for students in the Automotive Sector. The College has a strong co-op program and offers a variety of -programs in the science and technology fields. In addition, Georgian College has formed partnerships with several universities in Ontario to offer degree-granting status in selected fields of study.

Barrie's waterfront is at the heart of it's tourism industry. As well as the beautiful beaches, the Kempenfest Arts and Crafts Festival draws more than 300,000 people annually and the Serendipity Princess offers scenic cruises around the bay. Casino Rama, less that half an hour away, is another major attraction.

Finally, the City of Barrie offers both conventional bus service with Barrie Transit and specialized transit services for people with mobility restrictions with Barrie Accessible Transportation Service. Located 80 kilometers north of Toronto on the six-lane Highway 400 and only minutes away from the East-West Highway 401 and 407 corridors, Barrie is highly accessible.own!
