ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Nestled between the Rouge River Valley and Lake Ontario, the West Rouge is one of Toronto's most scenic neighbourhoods. West Rouge's gently sloping hillside is carved with winding roads and lined with towering trees that resemble a cottage country atmosphere.

West Rouge is a family-oriented neighbourhood with a very active community association. This association, in affiliation with the West Rouge sports and recreation association, runs a popular "Family Day" each September, and hosts New Years and Valentines day dances which are all held at the West Rouge Community Centre.

The West Rouge Plaza, at Port Union Road, is a convenient little plaza that contains a video store, a furniture store, a bakery, a hair salon, bowling, billiards, a sports bar and professional offices.

Centenial Plaza, located on the north-west corner of Port Union Road and Lawrence Avenue, features a deli and bakery, a hardware store, video store, flower shop, hair salon, travel agency, coffee shop, restaurants, convenience stores, a beer store, a liqour store, a pet shop, an animal clinic, professional offices and a medical centre.

The Ravine Park Plaza, located off Port Union Road at Fanfare Avenue, is a small local shopping plaza that caters to the everyday household needs of the West Rouge residents. The mix of stores here includes a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a video store, a hair salon, a bank, a bakery, a pet store, a collectables store and a hockey equipment shop.

The West Rouge Community Centre, located on Rouge Hills Drive boasts a banquet hall which can accommodate up to three-hundred and fifty people. This centre offers a variety of recreational programs for children and adults. The West Rouge Tennis Club is situated next to the community centre.

The West Rouge Sports and Recreation Association organizes a variety of community events including a winterfest and an Earth Day festival. A new program being offered by this association is "mature adult days." This program is held every Tuesday and includes lectures, nature walks, woodcarving and field trips.

The West Rouge Canoe Club has been a part of this community for over forty years. This club operates at the Rouge Beach and offers canoe instruction for all ages and levels of ability. The West Rouge Canoe Club also operates a summer camp and hosts a two day international Dragon Boat festival in June. The West Rouge Canoe Club produced four Canadian paddlers at the last Olympics.

The West Rouge Soccer Club is one of the largest soccer clubs in the City of Toronto. This club operates year-round house leagues and rep teams at the local schools and parks. West Rouge also has an established baseball league program.

West Rouge residents are within walking distance of the Rouge Hill Go Train station, located on Lawrence Avenue East. The train ride to downtown Toronto's Union Station is approximately thirty-five minutes.

Motorists are only a couple of minutes from the Port Union Road on-ramp to Highway 401. This commuter highway connects to all of Toronto's major highways leading into and out of the city.
